SONGKHLA - Thirty-nine schools in three districts have suspended classes for two days after Songkhla Lake overflowed, flooding nearby areas of this southern province .

Much of the water has  since receded but the situation in Ramot, Krasae Sin and Sathing Phra districts remained serious on Tuesday.  Floodwater levels in the three districts remained high, although the rain had stopped.

Runoff from neighbouring Phatthalung and Nakhon Si Thammarat provinces flowed into Songkhla Lake, which burst its banks, flooding vast areas of farmland, roads, schools and communities.

Tambon Khukhud in Sathing Phra district was the worst hit, with nine villages awash in 30-100cm deep water, reports said.

It was announced on Tuesday morning that classes at 39 schools in the three districts along the Songkhla Lake were suspended on Dec 6-7.

Days of torrential rain and flooding have resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people in southern Thailand.

"582,343 people from 88 districts are affected and 14 have people have been killed," the Interior Ministry said in an update.

Three people had been injured and one person was missing, the statement added.
