Pictures of tourists sitting on a safety rail to enjoy a panoramic of Kiew Mae Parn in Doi Inthanon National Park have drawn a barrage of criticism, prompting a senior parks official to warn visitors to respect the rules.

The images posted by a visitor to the popular area show tourists sitting on the rail at a scenic point, despite a warning sign reading "Danger!" and "No climbing".

"Kiew Mae Parn. No climbing but they still climbed. Why don't Thais respect the rule?," reads a headline posted on the popular pantip.com web board.

Since the posting on Sunday, it has invited almost 80 comments, most of them criticising the tourists. The pictures have been widely shared on the social media.

"That viewpoint has no name. It should be named after the one who falls down," one commentator said sarcastically.

Kiew Mae Parn is a magnet for visitors to Doi Inthanon National Park in Chiang Mai.

Adisorn Noochdamrong, the deputy director-general of the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, on Wednesday ordered the Doi Inthanon park chief to assign an official to man the viewpoint to remind tourists that sitting on the rail was not allowed as they could fall off.

Tourists can help ensure safety by warning others if they find someone trying to climb onto the railing, he told the Daily News online.
