SURAT THANI - Police will on Tuesday take to court a man allegedly beating a stray dog to death on a cruelty to animal charge.

Panuwat Rattanaphan, an investigator of Wiang Sa police station, said Chakrin Nimon would be in the provincial court in the district on Tuesday after being charged with torturing the animal.

The 30-year-old mine worker was arrested on Sunday following a social media outcry over a video clip showing a man who looked like him using a baton to beat the dog to death.

Watchdog Thailand, a network against animal torture, contacted Wiang Sa police on Sunday for investigations, which finally led to the capture of Mr Chakrin at his home.

He reportedly admitted to police that he was the person in the clip and claimed he was trying to end its suffering after finding the animal lying with wounds at a mine's dumpsite, Pol Maj Panuwat said.

"You don't have the right to kill anyone including animals," one commentator wrote on the Watchdog Thailand Facebook.

Mr Chakrin could be fined up to 200,000 baht and thrown into jail for no more than two years for torturing the animal if he is found to have violated the Prevention of Animal Cruelty and Provision of Animal Welfare Act.
