School texts updated to account for royal succession

The Education Ministry has confirmed revised textbooks used in schools and universities to reflect the passing of Rama IX and the accession of His Majesty the King will be ready for the next academic year.

Permanent secretary for education Chaipreuk Sereerak said officials are speeding up the process to amend textbooks to ensure they will be ready in January.

A lot of information in textbooks regarding the royal institution needs to be updated since His Majesty's enthronement but only some of the actual details in the books need adjusting, he added.

Mr Chaipruek said he met officials from the Office of the Basic Education Commission, the Office of the Vocational Education Commission and the Office of Non-Formal and Informal Education on Thursday, to discuss the book revisions.

Work schedules need to be strictly observed to ensure deadlines are met, Mr Chaipreuk said.

The revision process deadlines have all beet set. The final revisions must be sent to experts in related fields for checking next month.

The revised textbooks are to be ordered in February for use in the next academic year beginning in May.

The ministry earlier invited a team of experts to examine curriculum details to see what needed to be updated, Mr Chaipreuk said.

The updates being made will include information about the King's enthronement and the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, he added.

Related changes of content will also be made in social and religious studies, history, Thai language and the roles of good citizens, he said.

Content on special days and occasions in school textbooks will be updated in light of the new reign, according to Mr Chaipreuk.

At Thursday's meeting, Mr Chaipreuk said he floated the idea of publishing a special book about His Majesty the King and his royal activities, which would be easy for students to understand.
