CHON BURI: A driver escaped death when his car plunged from the third storey of a condominium car park on Saturday morning.

Police and rescue workers rushed to the condominium in Muang district after being alerted to the incident at 10am. They found a Toyota sedan with a Bangkok licence plate overturned on the ground floor of the building. Driver Somkiart Phuttamilinpratheep, 52, was found at the scene with minor head injuries. Rescue workers took him to a local hospital.

Mr Somkiart, a media executive who works in Bangkok and stays at his Chon Buri condo unit on weekends, told police that the accident occurred while he was driving to the fourth floor of the building to park. When he arrived at the third floor, he lost control of his vehicle and could not brake it. The car crashed into the iron railing and then plunged to the ground, Thai media reported.

Thairath Online quoted the driver as saying that he had shifted into reverse gear but the car moved forward and this caused his vehicle to plunge to the ground.

Police plan to examine closed-circuit television camera footage to find out the exact cause of the incident.
