The Min Buri Provincial Court on Monday sentenced Dr Nitiwadee Pucharoenyos, alias Mor Nim, and a lawyer to death for the murder of national sharpshooter Jakkrit Panichpatikum in 2013.
Two other defendants in the high-profile case were sentenced to life imprisonment, and the other, Mor Nim's mother, was acquitted.
The prosecution case was that on March 31, 2014, Surang Duangjinda, 74, her daughter Nitiwadee, aka Mor Nim, 40, and Santi Thongsem, 30, a lawyer, hired Jirasak Klinkhlai, 35, a gunman, to kill Jakkrit, who was Nitiwadee's former husband.
Tawatchai Phetchote, 35, was also involved, driving a motorcycle for Jirasak to carry out the murder.
Jakkrit was shot many times in the body and killed by Jirasak, who used a semi-automatic 7.62mm Tokarev pistol.
The prosecution named Jirasak, Mrs Surang, Nitiwadee, Santi and Tawatchai the 1st - 5th defendants in the case.
All defendants pleaded not guilty.
During the trial, Mrs Surang, Nitiwadee and Santi were freed on 500,000 baht bail each. Jirasak and Tawatchai were not granted bail and were detained in a prison throughout the trial.
All five defendants were present in court on Monday for the judgement.
The court convicted and sentenced to death Nitiwadee and Santi, the lawyer, and dismissed the case against Mrs Surang, Nitiwadee's mother.
The court handed down life imprisonment to Jirasak, the gunman, and Tawatchai, the motorcycle driver.
After the court delivered the judgement, Chamnan Chadit, the lawyer for Nitiwadee, said he had filed a request for bail for his client, offering 2 million baht security in addition to the old sum of 500,000 baht.
The provincial court forwarded to bail request to the Appeals Court for consideration. Nitiwadee was in detention pending the Appeals Court's decision.
Jakkrit was a well-known national sharpshooter and his murder drew a lot of public attention.
On Nov 12, 2013, Mrs Surang claimed involvement in the murder while she and her daughter Nitiwadee met Paveena Hongsakula, the then- social development and human security minister. The meeting was in the presence of Min Buri police.
Ms Paveena was known to have helped settle domestic disputes between Nitiwadee and Jakkrit in the past.
Mrs Surang said then she ordered the killing because she wanted to protect her daughter. She said Jakkrit had abused her during their six-year marriage. She said her daughter was not involved in the murder.
According to Mrs Surang, Jakkrit had also threatened her with a gun and insulted her daughter in front of her. She also said Jakkrit's attacks resulted in Nitiwadee losing their third child through a miscarriage.
While Nitiwadee had denied knowing of her mother's plot to kill Jakkrit, police did not believe her. Both were charged with the murder.
