An entertainment company has complained that social media, especially those with live streaming features, are killing its 35-year-old business.

A recent post on the popular forum site, pantip.com, referred to a "shock" drop in sales of discs featuring the latest show by comedian Udom "Nose" Taepanich. EVS Entertainment Co is the copyright owner of the show.

The post said the company spent 20 million baht on the production of the copyright-protected discs but the launch on Dec 15 turned into a disaster.

It blamed some buyers for broadcasting the show via live streaming features of social media, especially Facebook, right on the launch date.

Thairath quoted Suthisan Suranankingphet, chairman of EVS Entertainment, as saying that the company produced about 200,000 copies of the show for sale but only about 13,000 were purchased in the first five days.

He said social media had cut the initial sales of previous shows by Mr Udom to about 100,000 copies but the live streaming service by Facebook this year heavily hit the company's business.

If the situation continued next year, the company could be shut down, Thairath quoted Mr Suthisan as saying.
