Minor quakes hit northern Thailand

CHIANG MAI - Minor quakes have jolted the northern part of the country, especially Chiang Mai, but they are ordinary occurrences and not dangerous, Adisorn Foongkachorn, director of the northern seimology office, said on Wednesday.

He said Thailand has as many as 14 fault lines, but the tremors were only minor, posing no danger and people should not be worried.

On Tuesday night, a small quake with a magnitude of 2.4, and centred about 2 kilometres underground, shook Chomthong district of Chiang Mai at 11.26pm, followed by another with a magnitude of 2.4, about 3km deep, at 11.37pm in Mae Wang district.

On Wednesday, a 1.8 magnitude quake, 1km underground, jolted Chiang Mai's Doi Lo district at 1.39am, followed by a 2.4 magnitude quake, 1km underground, was felt in Chiang Mai's Muang district, at 4.29.
