Road accident victims made up the largest category of people assisted by emergency medical services via hotline 1669 in 2016, according to the National Institute for Emergency Medicine (NIEM).

Dr Anucha Sethasathien, the NIEM secretary-general, said the institute carried a total of 1.5 million patients for emergency treatment this year.

Of these, the largest number - 387,009 - suffered injuries received in accidents involving various types of motor vehicles

This was followed by 298,446 people suffering from fatigue or chronic paralysis; 162,701 from stomach, back, pelvis and groin pain; 113,510 from accidental falls; 109,405 with breathing difficulties; 61,619 suffered from fainting and lack of responsiveness; 60,402 from paediatric disease; 44,135 convulsion; 39,010 headaches and unusual symptoms of the eye, ear, nose or throat; and, 34,246 suffering from chest pains or heart problems.

Based on these figures, people should be particularly careful when driving, and strictly follow traffic rules, Dr Anucha said.  Drink-driving was the main cause of road accidents.

Strokes were also frequent causes of people requiring emergency services, he added.

"Everyone should take good care of their health if they wish to be free from afflictions which require emergency treatment.

"All people should take the opportunity of the coming New Year to start to exercise, eat only healthy food, undergo an annual physical check-up, and drive carefully on the roads.

"Call 1669 around the clock in case of emergency," he said.
