TRAT/CHANTHABURI - Four people were killed and 21 injured in two separate road accidents in two eastern provinces on late Friday night and early Saturday morning.

In Trat, a pickup truck loaded with vegetables crashed head-on into a car in Khlong Yai district at around 3.30am on Saturday, killing two people and injuring three others.

The accident occurred at kilometre marker 453 on Sai Sam Road in tambon Mairood, said Pol Lt Col Thanat Mangmee, a duty officer at Khlong Yai police station.

Police and rescue workers found the badly damaged pickup truck at the scene scattered with vegetables. Two women were hurt. They were identified as driver Wanna Sa-nguanhong, 40, and Ploenpit Amnuaysawat, 60, both from Trat.

Next to the pickup truck, a car was found badly damaged. A man and two women inside were trapped in the wreckage of the sedan and one of them later died at the scene. The dead woman was Thammawan Yindee, 33. The two others were seriously hurt. They were driver Theerawut Songkham, 33, and Ms Thiwa Thit-sanguan, 35.

All of the injured people were rushed to a nearby hospital. One of them later died.

Ms Ploenpit told police that her pickup truck was heading to a border market at Ban Hat Lek village to sell vegetables when the Honda Civic car in the opposite lane slammed into it.

Police were investigating.

In Chanthaburi, two Cambodian migrant workers were killed and 18 others, mostly Cambodians, hurt when a pickup truck they were travelling in crashed head-on into a 10-wheel truck in Soi Dao district on late Friday night.

Police went to the scene between kilometre markers 58 and 59 on Tamoon-Khlong Yai road and found the damaged pickup truck blocking the road. Driver Sakda Sae Lao and 17 Cambodian workers were injured and trapped in the vehicle.  One man and one woman, both Cambodian workers aged around 35, were found dead on the road.

Not far from the pickup truck, the wreckage of the truck was found. The unidentified driver, 50, was injured and trapped in the wreckage. All 18 injured people were retrieved from the two vehicles and sent to nearby hospitals.

A police investigation found that the pickup truck was heading to Soi Dao district after taking the Cambodian workers to renew their work permits at Ban Laem border village in Pong Nam Ron district of this eastern province when it was hit by the truck on the opposite lane.
