Operators of the skytrain and subway have waived their fares as a New Year's gift for Bangkok people while traffic has been partially closed in Bangkok's central business district for two major New Year events.

The BTS skytrain and the MRT subway announced they would offer free services from 12pm on Saturday to 12pm on Sunday. Commuters can ask for free tickets at the stations, according to traffic police.

On Saturday afternoon, police began to close traffic on Rama I Road between Chaloem Pao intersection to Ratchaprasong intersection for the Candlelights of Siam@Central World event.

The event was held by Central Pattana Plc, the operator of the shopping centre; the Culture Ministry; and the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

At Sanam Luang, police patrolled the area to ensure safety for people joining the Candlelight of Siam, an overnight praying ceremony organised by the government.

As many as 107 closed-circuit cameras were installed at 27 piers on Khlong Saeng Sap and lights were added to ensure safety for participants, many of whom are likely to come by boat.

Some 40,000-50,000 people are expected to join the praying ceremony, said Pol Maj Gen Panurat Lakboon, acting deputy Bangkok police chief.
