Moderate quake in Chiang Mai, no damage

A moderate magnitude 3.4 earthquake was felt in Chom Thong district, Chiang Mai province, early Friday afternoon, but no injury or damage was reported.

The tremor occurred at 12.54pm with the epicentre around one kilometre underground. 

It was the second quake of the day, following a 2.2 tremor, also one kilometre deep, at 2.01am, the Seismology Bureau of the Thai Meteorological Department reported.

Students at a community learning centre at tambon Ban Luang in Chom Thong district ran out of classrooms when they felt the quake on Friday afternoon. With no damage apparent  the situaion returned to normal a few minutes later.

District chief Nitiya Pongpanich said a series of  tremors had occurred in the district since Jan 1, but had caused no damage.

It was to be expected as the district sat above an active fault line. People should not worry and just closely monitor the situation.
