Rough seas hit ferry start

The official launch of the ferry service between Pattaya and Hua Hin is on hold until next month due to bad weather, the Marine Department says.

Department director-general Sorasak Sansombat said Tuesday the postponement was necessary because the weather is terrible.

The official opening of the service was originally scheduled for Thursday.

Mr Sorasak said people wanting to use the service should wait for an announcement setting a new date for the launch of the service.

The Pattaya-Hua Hin ferry service will run from Pattaya's Bali Hai pier to Hua Hin's Saphan Pla. The journey should take around 90 minutes, much shorter than the five-hour road trip, as the route cuts across the Gulf of Thailand.

Preecha Tantipura, president of Royal Passenger Liner, the ferry operator, said the company plans to launch the service next month when the weather is expected to be better.

Free trips during the ferry service trial period, which began last month, will still be available up until Sunday, weather permitting, he said.

Mr Sorasak said the company is required to strictly comply with the department regulations to ensure passenger safety which means suspending services during bad weather. He urged passengers to check the service schedule with the operator.

Latest weather forecasts for the Gulf of Thailand predict strong winds and rough sea for at least the next few days.
