The Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation will waive park entry fees for Thai tourists, but not foreigners, on National Children’s Day on Saturday to promote children's learning and environmental development.

The department announced the entry fee exemption in its statement released on Thursday, citing “the need to cultivate awareness about conservation and the importance of natural resources and the environment among children” as a reason.

The statement instructed all national park chiefs to decide on the appropriate number of visitors they should limit on the children’s day holiday to avoid causing a negative effect on the environment.

National Children’s Day falls on the second Saturday in January with many private and state agencies holding activities or waiving ticket fees for museums, cinemas and other attractions to encourage children's learning and at the same time entertaining them.

Park officials normally charge 10-50 baht for Thai children and 20-100 baht for Thai adults, depending on the parks they visit. Adult foreign visitors are required to pay 200-500 baht and their children are charged 100-300 baht.

There were 16.68 million visitors, 4.51 million of whom were foreigners, to 147 inland and marine national parks nationwide in fiscal 2016 ending in September, generating 1.9 billion baht, according to the department’s statistics published on its website.
