More rain to come, Nakhon Si Thammarat airport reopens

As the floods slowly drain off in the southern region, the weather bureau has warned that more heavy rain expected in several provinces next week.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said on Friday that floodwater was receding in all affected provinces, and in Narathiwat, Pattani Ranong and Yala the crisis was over.

However, the Meteorological Department forecast on Friday said  a new front of the northeast moonson was advancing and could bring more heavy rain to Chumphon, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Narathiwat, Pattani, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Surat Thani and Yala from Monday to Wednesday

Residents in the eight provinces should again be ready for flash floods, water runoff and landslides, the weather office said.

Flooding since the new year has claimed 36 lives in  southern regions, with one other person still missing. It also damaged and closed the airport in Nakhon Si Thammarat, roads and railway tracks. (continues below)

Airport general manager Suksawas Sukhawanno on Friday announced that the airport had reopened for flights. It had been closed since Jan 6.

Thai Lion Air, Thai AirAsia and Nok Air fly to the southern province and Mr Suksawas advised travellers to check the schedules with the airlines.

Southern trains still cannot go beyond Thung Song junction in Thung Song district of Nakhon Si Thammarat because of flood damage to the tracks.it ws planned that ll suthern services 

State Railway of Thailand governor Wutthichart Kalayanamitr said on Friday the agency planned to allow all trains to resume running between Bangkok and Nakhon Si Thammarat and Phatthalung stations from Monday.
