NAKHON PATHOM - A passenger van went up in flames on Borommaratchonnani Road on Sunday morning, but nobody was hurt as there were no passengers on board, police said.

The incident occurred at 9.36am at the mouth of Phutthamonthon Sai 8 Road in tambon Khun Kaew, Nakhon Chaisi district.

Police and rescuers arrived at the scene shortly after that and were able to put out the fire in 15 minutes, but the vehicle had been completely destroyed.

Sattha Tokaew, 41, the driver, told police that on Sunday morning he took some passengers from Ratchaburi province to the old southern bus terminal on Pinklao Road.

While on the way back to Ratchaburi along Pinklao-Nakhon Chaisi Road without a passenger on board, the van's horn suddenly blared non-stop. He parked the van on a roadside for a check.

At the time, an elderly man who came by on a bicycle told him that the underneath of the van had caught fire.

Mr Sattha said he tried to douse the fire with a chemical extinguisher but was not successful, prompting him to call the police.

The police were investigating. It was initially believed the fire was started by a shortcircuit.
