23 suspects deny police exam cheating

Twenty-three people turned themselves in to police yesterday and denied any wrongdoing in connection with the police entrance exam fraud.

They were among 52 people facing arrest warrants approved by the Criminal Court in connection with irregularities in the police exam last Dec 4.

All except one are medical students who allegedly sat the exam to help applicants cheat.

The other was Jeerapoj Plaiduang, 45, an official with the Pathumwan district office under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's City Law Enforcement Department.

The exam fraud came to light when the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) Training Centre lodged a complaint with Phahon Yothin police early this month accusing nearly 350 people of being involved.

The medical students who turned themselves in insisted they had nothing do with the cheating and refused to give further statements, MPB commissioner, Pol Lt Gen Sanit Mahathavorn, said Monday.

Of all the others who failed to show up, only six wrote letters asking to postpone turning themselves in, he said. Mr Jeerapoj is expected to meet police today.

Investigators did not oppose bail for those who met police and they were later released after they posted 100,000 baht each, according to Pol Lt Gen Sanit.

Investigators will ask the Criminal Court to approve arrest warrants for more than 100 other applicants in connection with the fraud, MPB deputy chief, Pol Maj Gen Adul Narongsak, said.

Meanwhile, a committee set up to investigate the exam fraud has decided that applicants involved in the cheating should be disqualified, deputy national police chief, Pol Gen Detnarong Sutthichanbancha, said Monday.

He said irregularities were found among candidates sitting entrance tests for the MPB, Provincial Police Region 7, and Provincial Police Region 1.

He refused to reveal how many applicants were to be disqualified and said the two provincial police regions are expected to announce their exam results on Jan 27, but the MPB is likely to postpone declaring the results to Jan 30.
