CHIANG MAI -- Chiang Mai Zoo has a new addition, a mountain goat or liang pha, one of 15 protected animals in Thailand in danger of extinction.

Zoo director Niphon Wichairat said the young kid, which has yet to be named, was born early last Friday morning. The father was called Thung Ngern and the mother Fa, both three years old.

It is still not known if the zoo's newest member is male or female, as Fa has not allowed veterinarians to take a close look, he said.

The youngster brings the size of liang pha herd at Chiang Mai Zoo to 14.

Liang pha (scientific name Capricornis Sumatraensis) is a protected animals listed in Category 1 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Spicies of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites).
