Student killed, many injured when bus overturns

SURAT THANI - A female student from Songkhla was killed and many other students injured when a bus in which they were travelling overturned on Highway 41 in Wiang Sa district on Thursday morning.

The bus was taking about 40 Mathayom 6 students and teachers of Hat Yai Withayalai 2 School in Songkhla's Hat Yai district on a study tour, heading for an education camp in Prachuap Khiri Khan, according to media reports.

Pol Capt Narukhom Khuiuyoksui, a duty officer at Khao Niphat police station, said the accident occurred about 6.30am on the Bangkok-bound side of near kilometre marker 234 on Highway 41 near Moo 1 village in tambon Khao Nipun.

The bus overturned on the road median strip.

Many students were reported injured, about 5 of them seriously. One female student, Suwisa Chaikij, 17, was killed. The injured were admitted to Wiang Sa Hospital.

The cause of the accident was being investigated.
