Floods continue to wreak havoc in lower South

Floods continue to wreak havoc in parts of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Phatthalung in the lower South, according to local media reports.

In Pattani province, water overflowed from the Pattani River to inundate the provincial town on Sunday morning.

Communities along Na Wang, Lang Wang and Kalapho roads in tambon Chabang Tiko and Rong Ang road in tambon Sabarang in Pattani Municipality were about 50 centimetres under water.

In Phatthalung, although rain stopped on Saturday water released from Wang Len Dam had caused widespread flooding in tambon Ko Tao of Pa Phayom district.

About 200 households in Khuan Khanum district below the dam had long been flooded with no signs of water receding.

In Yala, Talo Tipo villlage in tambon Bannang Sareng of Muang district had been hardest hit by run-off from Bilo mountain. Muddy water had caused the wall of a power plant of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) to collape. The floodwater also hit a factory producing fried durian chips, damaging machines and production equipment.

Total damage had yet to be assessed.

In Narathiwat, the Royal Irrigation Department had installed six more pumps at the three-way junction at Ban Bango in tambon Lamphu of Muang district in order to drain water out of the provincial town via Khlong Yakang canal.

Roads in the municipality were about 30 centimetres under water.

The Meteorological Department on Sunday morning issued a weather forecast saying that heavy to very heavily rain is expected to hit Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat from Sunday until Wednesday.
