Woman seriously burnt in crash caused by roadside fire

SA KAEO -- A woman sustained serious burns and many others were injured after their car and a pickup collided on a highway covered by thick smoke from a fire in Wang Sombun district on Sunday, police said.

Pol Capt Thongchai Naknaen, a Wang Sombun police investigator, said the accident occurred at about 11am near Ban Wang Hin on Highway 317.

Banchong Diewklang, 60, the owner of the car, told police that he, his wife Waree, their 10-year-old son Teerawat, and Wipasinee Chimsang, 24, his niece, were travelling in the car to visit relatives in Chanthaburi.

At one stage they went through thick smoke covering the road. The smoke was from the burning of leftover sugarcane stems on one side of the road. His vehicle suddenly collided with an oncoming pickup truck driven by Sathit Chimdee, 56.

The car skidded off the road and was engulfed in flames. All of them managed to flee the car, but his wife, Mrs Waree, sustained serious burns while the others were slightly injured.  Mrs Waree was admitted to Wang Sombun Hospital.

The car was totally destroyed by the fire.

Mr Sathit, the driver of the pickup truck, was slightly injured.
