The annual Lunar New Year celebrations will not be held on Yaowarat Road, known as Bangkok's Chinatown, this weekend as the nation remains in mourning for the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
The decision was made at a meeting of an organising committee for the Yaowarat Lunar New Year festival on Monday, said Yutthana Pamai, director of Samphanthawong district office, which supervises the Yaowarat area.
The holiday this year is from Jan 27 to Feb 2, mainly for businesses run by ethnic Chinese. Government offices, banks and stock markets open normally.
The government set a one-year mourning period for King Rama IX, starting on Oct 14, a day after he passed away.
Meanwhile, Deputy Bangkok governor Amnuay Nimmano urged Thais of Chinese descent who would pay homage to their ancestors and deities during the holidays not to leave their houses while candles or incense sticks are still burning to prevent fires.
Pol Lt Gen Amnuay said tessakij (city inspectors) had been put on alert for fire incidents during the seven-day holiday.
Activities of recent years included decorations, parades, free food, shows and other activities on the road, which was closed to traffic for a few days.
