NARATHIWAT -- Floodwater has begun to recede, leaving only low-lying areas still inundated, in this southern border province.

As of Tuesday morning, rain continued to fall in mountainous areas in Waeng, Tak Bai, Sukhirin, Chanae and Si Sakhon district.  The water level in the Sai Buri and Sungai Kolok rivers had stopped rising.

Floodwater had receded in Cho Ai Rong, Rangae, Muang, Yingo, Bacho and Rueso districts.  However, ricefields, rubber plantations and orchards in low-lying areas were still under water.  Road surfaces had re-appeared as the water drained off, allowing people to leave their houses to buy food.

The water level in the Bang Nara River remained unchanged.  Riverside communities were still flooded.

In Sungai Padi district, soldiers, police and administrative officials went to Ban Pileng on Tuesday morning to distribute water, boxes of food and other necessities to flooded villages.

Ban Pileng had been hard-hit.  Fifty-four residents from 10 households had been moved to temporary shelter on the second floor of Rat Phakdi School.

Although the floodwater was receding in Narathiwat province, many houses and farms in Sungai Kolok district remained inundated on Tuesday, with the water 100-140cms deep. (Photo by Waedao Harai)
