NAKHON SI THAMMARAT -- An army officer seriously injured in a road accident while returning to base on Monday after a flood relief operation died early on Tuesday at Maharat Hospital.

The accident occurred on Monday afternoon near Moo 3 village in tambon Thung Pho of Chulabhorn district.

Lt Col Theerapol Thianphowat, 40, commander of the Thung Song-based 5th Engineering Battalion at Thepsatree Srisunthorn Camp, was returning to the base in a Toyota Fortuner driven by Chief Warrant Officer Saroj Phetsri-ngoen.

The vehicle overturned near the village.  Both men were seriously injured and admitted to Maharat Hospital.

Lt Col Theerapol died from head injuries about 1am on Tuesday. He had earlier led a relief operation to flood-hit people at Cha-uat Withaya School in Cha-uat district. Engineers from his battalion also built several Bailey bridges over sections of road washed away by floods.

Many people turned up at the hospital last night offering to donate type A blood for Lt Col Theerapol after the hospital posted a request on social media.
