AYUTTHAYA - A woman was killed and three others injured on Tuesday morning when two wheels coming off an 18-wheel freight hauler hit them.

The accident took place between kilometre markers 49-50 on Phahon Yothin Road in tambon Chiang Rak Noi of Bang Pa-in district at 6am.

Bang Pa-In police inquiry officer Pol Lt Col Pornnarin Pruangkratokice said the wheels flew off a Bangkok-registered 18-wheeler and hit Kwanta Pomsuwan, 38, and her three colleagues who were waiting for a bus.

The women worked at an electronics company in the Hi-Tech Industrial Estate Bang Pa-In.

Kwanta died at the scene with the broken neck and limbs. The other women -- Metnapa Srichalao, 37, who was badly hurt, Supaporn Suthisak, 39, Suthairat Nutip, 34, -- were sent to Bang Pa-in district hospital.

Allegedly unaware of the incident, truck driver Sarawut Waidee, 31, drove on for another eight kilometres and stopped to rest when highway police came to arrest him.

Mr Sarawut reportedly said he left Klong Toey Port at 5am to collect goods in Lop Buri province and only checked tyre pressure before setting out the journey.  Pol Lt Col Pornnarin said Mr Sarawut was tested negative in an alcohol test.
