NAKHON RATCHASIMA - The Pak Thong Chai police chief was ordered to report for work at regional headquarters after failing to attend a meeting with his boss because he was sleeping off a hangover at home.

Pol Lt Gen Chanasit Wattanawarangkul, commander of Provincial Police Region 3, signed an order on Thursday for Pol Col Kampanat Thatujirangkul, who supervised Pak Thong Chai police station, to work at the regional headquarters in Muang district in Nakhon Ratchasima for one year starting Friday.

Pol Lt Gen Chanasit said after signing the order that the Pak Thong Chai police superintendent was the only officer not to attend a meeting he called on Wednesday for all station chiefs under the Provincial Police Region 3.

All 236 police station commanders showed up at the meeting for a briefing on his policies except Pol Col Kampanat, he added.

The regional police chief then went to Pak Thong Chai police station without telling anyone in advance on Thursday.

When he arrived at the station at 9.30am, he did not find Pol Col Kampanat there and ordered a junior officer on duty at the station to make a phone call asking him to come to the office.

Pol Col Kampanat finally appeared at the station at 11am and said he was "hungover and had overslept" when asked why he was not at work, according to Pol Lt Gen Chanasit.

Pol Col Kampanat said in a telephone interview after the order was issued that he was ready to follow all decisions made by his supervisor. He admitted that he was not at the station when his boss came before hanging up the phone.
