The songtaew, carrying 11 holidaymakers, was heading up the mountain when its brakes failed on a curve and it fell 35 metres onto a local road below at 6.19am, said police.

The impact threw all of the passengers from the vehicle. Eight of them were injured, five seriously. Among the injured were two girls. Local police and rescue workers sent the injured to a nearby hospital.

Police said the visitors from Phichit province had hired the songtaew so that they could view the early-morning "sea of fog" for which Phu Thap Boek is famous.

Phetchabun governor Piboon Hatthakitkoson and other officials visited the hospital where the injured were being treated. The governor instructed the hospital and local authorities to provide full assistance to the injured tourists.
