Foreign tourist slips on rocks, drowns on Phuket

PHUKET -- A foreign tourist of unknown nationality died after slipping on rocks and being swept into the sea on Kata Beach in Muang district.

Witnesses said the unidentified tourist aged between 50 and 60 was taking a stroll along the rocky coastline when he accidentally collapsed and waves swept him out to sea at about 4pm.

A foreigner who was snorkelling in the area and a Thai longtail boat driver were able to pull him from the sea.

Emergency responders from Third Naval Area Command and the Karon Municipality Tourist Assistance Centre tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead while being transported to Vajira Phuket Hospital.

Police found red scrape marks resulted from the collapse on his buttocks, but there were no other injuries to his body. Police will conclude the official cause of death after the release of autopsy results.

They are checking with nearby hotels to identify the man.
