Fatal road rage shooting sparks self-defence debate

Viral video clips have generated a vigorous debate on social media about who should be blamed in a lethal road rage incident involving a 50-year-old engineer and a group of teenagers.

The clash in Chon Buri province last Saturday culminated in a teenager being shot dead.

According to reports, engineer Suthep Pochanasomboon shot Nawapol Peungpai, 17, in tambon Ang Sila of Muang district during a car parking dispute in the seaside area.

The youth, who was with friends travelling in two vehicles including a van, was shot in his left chest and later died.

Mr Suthep, who was with his family, was arrested and charged with premeditated murder and illegal possession of a firearm in a public place. He was released on bail of 200,000 baht.

The dead youth's companions claimed he was only helping others negotiate the car conflict.

Later a video clip, apparently from the engineer's vehicle, was posted showing the incident. Netizens, including some celebrities, have put forward the issue of self-defence in the case.

The clip shows the engineer's vehicle stopped to seek help from a rescue worker. Then, youths from a following van rush to the vehicle. A fierce argument follows, and then the sounds of a fight, followed by a gunshot. A man's voice says he fired the shot because he was punched.

Another video clip posted on Thursday shows a van double-parked, blocking in the man's car. The car driver and a woman sound angry with the way it is parked.
