CHIANG RAI - As lovers flocked to district offices across the country to register their marriages on Valentine’s Day, twenty-two couples chose to exchange their wedding vows in hot-air balloons floating above this northern province.

About 1,000 couples registered their marriages at the “Balloon Love’’ activity at Singha Park in Muang district of Chiang Rai on Tuesday.

But only 22 couples were chosen to exchange their vows floting above the city in balloons.

Two pairs were celebrity couples  - singer-turned-businessman Thana “Chen’’ Lipayaraya and Kanikar Phusri, and table-tennis star and Paralympic gold medalist Rungroj Thainiyom and his bride Naruemol Chaichompoo.

Deputy Chiang Rai governor Sakchai Wongkanit, Rangsarit Laksitanon, executive of Boon Rawd Brewery Co and officials witnessed the marriage registration of all participating couples.

The event was part of Singha Park Chiang Rai Balloon Fiesta 2017, in which 32 hot-air balloons from 14 countries will fill Chiang Rai’s sky with a spectacle of colour, light and sound.
