A South Korean actor who won over hordes of Thai fans with his role in the "Descendants of the Sun" series has made himself even more popular after pictures showed him going to the Grand Palace to pay respect to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Song Joong-ki was at the Grand Palace on Thursday to pay his respect to the late King before he left the country. The pictures of him at Sanam Luang and outside the Grand Palace went viral among his followers.

The actor was in Bangkok to promote 11street, a South Korean online shopping website and to meet his Thai fans before leaving for Singapore on Thursday.

He starred in "Descendants of the Sun", a mega-hit Korean series in Thailand. The drama is about Korean soldiers on a peacekeeping mission in another country to save lives of people in the war zone.

Its popularity hit the roof and became the talk of the town in March last year when Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said he followed the drama and even urged his compatriots to watch it and learn from it.

"The drama shows patriotism and sacrifices of the nation which make conflicting parties reconcile themselves," the prime minister said at the time.
