AYUTTHAYA - The government plans to revive a cargo port on the Pasak River in Tha Rua district that has been left unused since its completion six years ago, according to an adviser to the National Legislative Assembly's transport committee.

Prayuth Kongchalermsap said this during an inspection trip to the river port on Thursday morning.

He said the Marine Department bought 56 rai of land beside the Pasak River in 2008. It used a budget of nearly 380 million baht  to contract a company to build the port. Construction was completed in 2011.

It was built under a plan to move more cargo by water instead of by land, to reduce fuel consumption, traffic accidents and road repair costs.

However,  the port has not been used in the six years since its completion.

Mr Prayuth said the government is interested in reviving the port and putting it into use.

Ayutthaya governor Sujin Chaichumsak has requested nearly 1 billion baht to improve the logistics of the port in the hope of turning the province into a hub for the transport and distribution of cargo, he said.
