Work on border river wall halted by slingshot attack

TAK -- Workers building a wall on the Thai side of the Moei River to prevent soil erosion in Mae Sot district were attacked on Monday from across the river by members of Myanmar's border guard force (BGF), who fired clay balls and iron bolts from slingshots, according to a media report.

The rain of projectiles caused no damage, but construction was brought to a halt, according to the report in Matichon Online.

The work is being carried out by the Interior Ministry's Public Works Department on the Moei River bank at Ban Tha-at, near Warehouse No 10, to prevent further erosion of the bank, with the rainy season drawing near.

The BGF comprises members of the minority Karen tribe.

The work on the Thai side of the river was ordered halted, for fear that some people could be hurt.

A local leader at Ban Tha-at said authorities on the Myanmar side had expressed opposition to the embankment wall being built. Similar attacks had been launched twice before by BGF soldiers, he said.
