Two geologists die in water diversion tunnel collapse

CHIANG MAI - Two geologists were killed when a tunnel being built to divert water into Mae Kuang Dam reservoir in Mae Taeng district collapsed on Thursday morning, police said.

The tunnel collapsed near Ban Pasak Ngam in tambon Mae Hoe Phra about 7.30am. 

It is one of several being drilled under a Royal Irrigation Department project to divert water from Mae Taeng Dam into the Mae Ngat Dam reservoir, and then into the Mae Kuang Dam reservoir.

The two geologists, identified as Pratyawat Wasu-anant and Pathomporn Siriwat, both worked for Italian-Thai Development Plc. They were examining tunnel No 6 when it collapsed on top of them. A number of other people were injured.

The victims of the accident were taken to Mae Taeng Hospital.
