THAI flight from Sweden arrives safely after threat

A Thai Airways flight which faced a bomb threat before take-off at a Swedish airport arrived at Phuket airport on Saturday afternoon.

Monrudee Gettuphan, general manager of Phuket airport, said flight TG963 Stockholm-Phuket-Bangkok landed at Phuket airport at 1pm. It would later fly to Suvarnabhumi airport, she said. The flight was originally scheduled to arrive at Phuket airport at 1.25pm on Friday, but it was delayed due to the security alert.

The bomb threat was made on Thursday local time when a man telephoned a staff member at Arlanda airport in Stockholm and said one of the passengers on flight TG963 had carried a bomb on board the aircraft, a Thai Airways source said.

The Boeing 777-300, with 271 passengers and 18 crew members on board, left the terminal at 4.45pm local time and was on a runway preparing for take-off when the man made the call.

The pilots decided to abort the flight and took the aircraft to an apron before ordering all people to abandon the plane, the source added. Security authorities at the airport checked the plane and declared it safe. Passengers stayed overnight at an arranged hotel before flying out of Sweden on the following day.

Speaking to Swedish news agency IT, police spokesman Sven-Erik Ohlsson said: "Our command centre received information that this specific flight was threatened."
