Thunderstorms hit Phrae, Udon Thani

Summer thunderstorms have pummelled three villages in Wang Chin district in Phrae and Ban Phue district in Udon Thani, damaging more than 100 houses and injuring two elderly people.

In Phrae, soldiers from Phraya Chaiyaboon military camp in Den Chai district were sent to tambon Naphoon on Friday to repair homes damaged by a thunderstorm that hit the community in Wang Chin district late on Thursday night.   

Ninety-six houses in three villages within the sub-district were damaged. Many lost their roofs and a lot of trees were uprooted.

Phrae governor Wttana Putthichart said he had ordered Wang Chin district authorities and other agencies to urgently provide needed assistance.

In Udon Thani, two people were injured and 15 houses and three rice barns damaged when thunderstorms hit two villages in Ban Phue district on Thursday night.

Ban Phue district chief Natthapol Withee on Friday led officials and soldiers to survey damage in Moo 10 and  Moo 15 villages in tambon Nonthong.  

An elderly woman, Porn Mayothee, 80, and man, Sawat Nontanam, 65, were injured when the wind  ripped the roofs off their homes and debris collapsed on top of them.

The Meteorological Department said on Friday a moderate high pressure zone covers the Northeast of Thailand and the South China Sea. Hot spells could occur in parts the upper regions from March 14-16. Thunderstorms and gusty winds are forecast for the lower North, Northeast, Central and East regions during this period.
