SUPHAN BURI - The driver of a van was killed after his vehicle skidded off a road in Som Chuk district and rammed into a roadside tree early on Wednesday, police said.

The accident occurred at about 3am on Highway 340 (Suphan Buri-Chai Nat) in Moo 4 village of tambon Sam Chuk.

The van was engulfed in flames when Sam Chuk police and rescuers arrived at the scene.  The driver, Thanaphon Wararungratana, 35, was killed. After putting out the fire, the rescuers used cutters to extract the charred body from the driver's seat.

Eyewitnesses told the police that after passing the Sam Chuk intersection, the van swayed before skidding off the highway and ramming into a tree. It was then engulfed in flames.

It was believed the van driver was returning to his home in Derm Bang Nang Buat district after taking passengers to Bangkok. The driver was the only casualty as there were no passengers on board.
