The construction contractor of the northern Green Line has been asked to buy a new car to compensate the owner of a vehicle damaged when a lifting frame fell and crushed its bonnet on Friday.

The accident took place in the morning when Italian-Thai Development construction workers were lifting a launching girder for the installation of tracks between the 105th and 106th columns on Ratchayothin Road near the Ratchayothin intersection in Bangkok.

The construction is for the Mo Chit- Saphan Mai-Khu Khot Green Line (North).

The process required the use of a lifting frame but the equipment handling it malfunctioned the frame became unbalanced. It fell onto the construction site below and bounced off to hit the bonnets of two cars in the lane next to the site, said Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand assistant governor Surachet Laopoonsuk.

He said the MRTA told the company to replace the lifting equipment and find relief measures and compensate the owners of the cars.

"Initially, they will find two cars for them to use for free. For the more damaged one, a Nissan March, talks are being held to replace the car with the same make and model or with another model within the same price range. As for the other car, the contractor will pay for all the repair costs," he said.

The company was also asked to prepare backup measures to ensure a similar incident does not occur in the future.

The MRTA also asked that the company ban the subcontractors and those responsible for beam lifting from the project.

A warning was also issued to the adviser to the construction supervisor for negligence, Mr Surachet added.
