UNHCR chief to visit Thailand March 27-30

The head of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, will visit Thailand from March 27-30, Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said on Wednesday.

Mr Don said the Mr Grandi will pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Gen Taweep Netniyom, secretary-general of the National Security Council, at Government House on March 28.

Issues to be discussed include displaced persons and migrants, naturalisation and promotion of the rights of stateless people in Thailand, and the repatriation of war refugees from Myanmar to their home country.

Thailand has so far returned 70 refugees to Myanmar under a voluntary repatriation programme, Mr Don said.

The foreign minister said Mr Grandi will also visit the refugee camp at Ban Mae La in tambon Mae La of Tak's Tha Song Yang district on March 29.
