Songkran activities on Khao San Road in Bangkok will be more subdued this year in the wake of the mourning for the passing of the revered king.

Shops and restaurants will still be opened and people can still soak each other, Sa-nga Ruangwattansakul, adviser to the Khao San Road operators group, told Thai media.

However, festivities such as street concerts and the Miss Songkran beauty contest will not be held, he added.

Early-morning merit-making and the sprinkling of Luang Pu Khao San Buddha image will still be held, he said.

"All rooms at hotels and guest houses on the road have already been booked for April 12-14," he said.

Suppakrit Boonnyakhan, director of the Phra Nakhon district office which supervises the road, said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration had asked the operators for cooperation in the wake of the mourning for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Oct 22 last year.

Piyabut Jivaramonaikul, chairman of the group, added all roads near Khao San led to the Grand Palace where people came to pay respects to the king so more subdued celebrations this year could help ease traffic congestions.

Cabinet ministers approved April 12-16 as official Songkran holidays this year. Banks and stock markets, however, will be closed April 13-16, according to the Bank of Thailand.
