Volunteers praised for moving SUV by hand from fire

PHETCHABUN - People have praised a group of volunteers who moved an SUV by hand from a spreading fire in Phetchabun province.

The fire broke out in Muang district on Sunday and was approaching a house where the vehicle was parked in a garage.

The owner was not home at the time as he and his family went on a pilgrimage at Khao Khitchakut in Khao Kitchakut district of Chanthaburi, Sompong Kongwiset, a neighbour said.

Seeing the approaching fire, about two dozen people decided to lift the car and move it away from the blaze.

"We weighed the situation and decided to take the vehicle out of the garage away from the fire," he said. "We tried to push it but it could not be moved because of the handbrake."

"It is the spirit of Phetchabun people," wrote Kongrit Sanguansin on his Facebook account. "Thank you on behalf of the owner."

Others commended them on joining hands to save the vehicle.

The owner of the vehicle remains unknown.

The fire occurred at 1pm on Sunday in the old quarters of the town, damaging four wooden shops after fighters took about an hour to put it out, the National News Bureau of Thailand reported.
