Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will on Monday lead cabinet members and top brass to call on Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda at his Si Sao Thewes residence to ask for his blessings on the occasion of Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year.

Lt Gen Pissanu Putthawong, chief of the Office of Gen Prem Tinsulanonda Foundation, said the courtesy call would be simple without fanfare.

"Gen Prem is now in good health. He has regular annual checkups. There is nothing to worry about. Likhe does every year, he will open his residence tomorrow particularly for the prime minister and top military leaders," he said.

Sources said the top brass to call on Gen Prem will include the permanent secretary for defence, as well as the chiefs of all armed forces and the Royal Thai Police.

Gen Prem, 97, served as prime minister for nine years to 1988. Ten years later, he started serving as chairman of the Privy Council.
