PHITSANULOK - More than 100,000 cloth bags have been donated to Wat Bot district Hospital in response its request for environmentally friendly bags to replace plastic ones previously used for prescribed medication.

The management of the public hospital stopped distributing medication in plastic bags this year as part of its "green campaign", instead asking patients to bring cloth bags to hold their medicine.

The hospital also asked through social media that people donate cloth or paper bags for its use, explaining that many elderly patients could not afford to bring their own cloth bags.

Jakrapong Ngoenklan, the chief pharmacist, said on Monday there had been an unexpectedly warm response to the campaign. So far, the hospital had received more than 100,000 cloth bags, about a year's supply.

On Monday more bags were delivered to the hospital. Some had been used, while others were new or even handmade by individual donors.

MK Restaurant Co was among the donors on Monday, presenting 800 cloth bags marked with its own logo. The company fully supported the hospital's campaign against global warming, said Sajja Singha, assistant procurement director of the restaurant chain.

Mr Jakrapong said donations were still needed. The hospital had expanded the green campaign to its six community clinics in Wat Bot district, he said. Donors could call 0-5536-1079 ext 118, 08-1953-4535, 09-8532-6762 and 08-1280-2049 to arrange delivery.
