The Bangkok-Sungai Kolok rapid train was heading to the South when it hit the pickup truck carrying 13 Sonkgran celebrants, including six people sitting inside the cab and seven others in the pickup bed at an unmanned crossing.

The crash threw a 10-year-old boy sitting in the bed out of the vehicle. The boy, identified later as Panipan Kanna, died on the spot. Six others were hurt and rushed to a nearby hospital.

A Songkran celebrant told police that his group was heading to a nearby temple to celebrate the water-throwing festival, about 2 kilometres from the crash scene, adding that the driver did not notice the oncoming train when the vehicle reached the crossing.
