SAKON NAKHON - The body of Phra Khru Sophon Thammaphiwat, abbot of Wat Sirimongkol temple in Phang Khon district who died on Jan 27, has mysteriously disappeared from a refrigerated coffin at the temple.

Phra Khru Sophon, who was also an adviser to the district monastic chief, died of old age at 79. His body had been kept at Wat Sirimongkol at Ban Nong Ya Plong for 100 days, ending today, awaiting the cremation.

The temple planned to perform a ceremony at 9am on Wednesday before moving the monk's body to a temporary crematorium.

When the late monk's relatives, villagers and members of the temple committee opened the coffin early this morning, they found the body had disappeared. Left in the coffin were a pillow and a piece of cloth, which had been used to cover the body.

Shocked, they informed Phang Khon police of the disappearance of the late monk's remains.

Police were investigating a number of people to find out where the body had been moved and why.
