Unexploded RPGs found near border in Trat

TRAT - Nine rocket-propelled grenades have been found on a dirt road near the border with Cambodia, with only a warning sign and single strand of plastic tape to cordon them off.

The live RPGs were spotted by workmen surveying a dirt road to a temporary checkpoint at Ban Mamuang in Bo Rai district on Friday.

The road is under renovation, to improve transport links with Battambang province in Cambodia and promote border trade.

District chief Panuwat Putthakesorn said the grenades could have been left over from the factional fighting in Cambodia in the past, and been discovered by the Thailand Mine Action Centre (TMAC).

He advised construction workers beware of  other munitions that might have been left on the road.

Trat is one of the most dangerous border provinces as it is still littered with unexploded munitions dating back to the fighting in Cambodia. A total of 462 mines were located and destroyed last year, according to TMAC's latest report. The border of the province is close to a former Khmer Rouge base in Cambodia.
