AYUTTHAYA -- Thousands of nails believed to have fallen from a truck carrying construction material caused traffic havoc on outbound Highway 347 (Pathum Thani - Bang Pahan) early on Monday, puncturing many vehicles' tyres.

Pol Col Anek Pongsawat, Bang Pahan station chief, said the 3-inch nails littered the road at three spots -- the intersection at Wat Worachet, the Thung Makham Yong intersection in Muang Ayutthaya district, and a U-turn flyover in Bang Pahan district.

Reports of the nails causing punctures, and traffic chaos, began flooding in about 4am, he said

Police and rescue units used water cannons to wash the nails off the road and helped repair punctured tyres. Traffic returned to normal about dawn.

The police were examining footage of security cameras to learn where the nails came from. It was suspected they had fallen from the back of a truck carrying construction material.
