Summer storms warning for 4 regions

More summer storms are forecast for the North, Northeast, East and Central Plains, including Bangkok, over the next three days, after areas of four provinces were pounded on Tuesday night, damaging hundreds of houses.

The Meteorology Department said on Wednesday a high pressure zone from southern China is expected to reach the Northeast of Thailand on Thursday and remain over the region until Saturday, while hot spells are expected in the North.  

Thundershowers, gusty winds and hail are forecast in many provinces in the four regions during the period, followed by a temperature drop.

On April 27, summer thunderstorms are forecast  for Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun in the North; Nong Khai, Bung Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Buri Ram and Nakhon Ratchasima in the Northeast; Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Rayong, Chantaburi and Trat in the East.

On April 28 and 29, more storms are expected in Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun in the North; Loei, Chaiyaphum, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani in the Northeast; Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chantaburi and Trat in the East, and Lop Buri, Saraburi, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, Suphan Buri and Ratchaburi in the Central Plains, including Bangkok and vicinity.

People are advised to stay clear of unsecured buildings and structures.

In Nakhon Ratchasima, thunderstorms hit nine districts on Tuesday, damaging more than 300 houses in Pak Thong Chai, Wang Nam Khieo, Kaeng Sanam Nang, Non Daeng, Khong, Kham Thalae So, Prathai, Phimai and Sida. Pak Thong Chai was the worst hit district.

Mrs Saifon Raemjabok, 49, of Sisa Krabue village in Pak Thong Chai district, said a summer storm lashed her village around 11.30pm on Tuesday for more than one hour, ripping off the roof of her house and damaging many of her belongings.  

Suthep Ruenthawin, chief of Nakhon Ratchasima disaster prevention and mitigation office, said more than 600 houses in the province had been damaged by thunderstorms this month.  On Tuesday alone, 306 houses at 34 villages and two schools in the nine districts were damaged. There were no casualties, he added.

Nakhon Ratchasima governor Wichian Chantharanothai on Wednesday inspected affected communities and ordered local authorities to survey the damage and provide assistance to storm-hit households. (continues below)

In Khon Kaen, summer storms and strong winds damaged many houses and uprooted several roadside big trees in Muang district on Tuesday night.

In Buri Ram, four districts were pounded and more than 100 houses and several rice barns damaged.

The affected districts were Muang, Krasang, Phlapplachai and Khan Dong.

In Ratchaburi, thunderstorms and gusty winds hit Muang and Pak Tho districts on Tuesday night, ripping the roofs off at least 50 houses.

Ruangrit Khunmek, chairman of Khao Raeng tambon administration organisation in Muang district, said on Wednesday that  17 houses in his community were damaged and one man injured.

Local authorities surveyed the damage in Muang and Pak Tho district and reported that at least 50 houses were damaged.
