PHITSANULOK: A dead British man was found floating in the Nan River in the northern province yesterday morning.
Investigators are trying to piece together the events leading to his death, police said.
Pol Capt Anuwat Wattanakarun, a duty officer at Muang Phitsanulok police station, said the 74-year-old man was found in the river behind Wat Tha Maprang in Muang district.
Police were alerted to the body by local residents about 9.30am, he added.
Investigators arriving at the scene found rescue workers had found the body and retrieved it.
The dead man was wearing black trousers, a white shirt and shoes.
Workers took the body from the river and moved it to a nearby pier in front of Wat Chan Tawan Ork.
Investigators found no traces of bruising on the body, Pol Capt Anuwat said.
A driving licence bearing his name in Thai the alphabet, Trevor David Roberts, 2,640 baht in cash, a watch, a car key and a key ring and house key were recovered from his clothing, he said.
A doctor examining the body said the man may have died at least four hours before his body was discovered in the river, police said.
A woman who arrived at the pier, Puangthong Nuanchan, 59, identified herself to police as the younger sister of the dead man's Thai wife.
The woman said her brother-in-law had lived in Phitsanulok for more than 10 years.
Roberts had worked as an English language teacher at a college in the province before his retirement.
Ms Puangthong said the man mostly stayed at home with his wife and sometimes drove to visit expat friends.
She visited her sister's house on Tuesday and found the man was there as usual. It was the last time she saw him.
Pol Capt Anuwat said police contacted the deceased man's wife to notify her about the death of her husband.
The dead man's wife was not aware of his disappearance or the location of his car.
The officers planned to question her further, he added. Investigators are determining the cause of death.
