Mae Ngat Dam unaffected by quake

CHIANG MAI -- There was no damage to Mae Ngat Dam in Mae Taeng district of Chiang Mai province after a 4.0-magnitude quake hit Mae Suay district of Chiang Rai on Saturday night, said Chanuwat Lertsincharoen, director of the 1st Irrigation Office on Sunday.

The epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 10.13pm, was in Chiang Rai's Mae Suay district, about eight kilometres underground.

Mr Chanuwat said Mae Ngat Dam, a multi-purpose hydroelectric dam, had not been affected.  There were no reports of damage or casualties.

He said he was making the statement to allay fears amongst local people who might have received incorrect information about the aftermath of the quake.

As of 6.15am on Sunday, the weather radar station in Lamphun reported that light rain was falling in San Sai and Mae Taeng districts of Chiang Mai and was moving slowly in the northwesterly direction, he said.
